The Border Collie is renowned as the world's smartest dog. Shepherds in England and Scotland developed them to expertly manage both small and large sheep herds, working in perfect harmony with their masters. The challenging open hilly terrains made it impossible for shepherds to care for their flocks without these remarkable sheepdogs. It's said that one Border Collie can do the work of five shepherds. The most efficient dogs were selectively bred, emphasizing their ability to move sheep without stress or harm while withstanding the most challenging stock. Hence, the name "Border Collie" emerged, originating from the English and Scottish border regions.
A significant asset possessed by many Border Collies is known as "the eye," which allows them to control sheep through a fixed and steady gaze. The concept of "the eye" and the "crouch" is believed to have come from the Springer Spaniel on the English side of the border. Observing the Spaniel's crouching and staring behavior when hunting game likely inspired these characteristics in Border Collies.
The distinctive appearance of the Border Collie has evolved over time, with considerable variation. They can have rough, smooth, or semi-rough coats, varying from long to short hair. Border Collies may have blue, green, brown, black, or topaz eyes, and despite blue eye color, they do not suffer from blindness. These dogs come in various colors and sizes, ranging from 18 to 80 pounds, depending on their lineage. Their coat colors include black, red Merrill, blue Merrill, blue, grey, gold, white with spots, sable, red, brown or chocolate, lilac, seal, silver, and more. Different markings were introduced for easy identification from a distance, such as traditional markings, a half-white face, white head, or an eye patch.
Interestingly, every genuine Border Collie possesses a white-tipped tail, a feature introduced by shepherds to serve as a guiding lantern in the dark. This distinct characteristic, even if just a few hairs, allowed them to navigate in the nighttime, appreciating the magnificent starry skies.
My name is Gale, and I'm known as the Border Collie Lady. I have been raising Border Collies for over forty-two years. My journey with Border Collies began during my college years, and I've been passionately involved with them ever since. I take pride in producing Border Collie puppies of the highest quality, and they excel in various fields such as agility, obedience, search and rescue, therapy work, and more. But above all, my wonderful Border Collies offer lifelong companionship to families.
All my puppies are born right in my living room, which exposes them to the sights and sounds of everyday life, making them comfortable and well-adjusted. Some might even say they enjoy watching TV! They are handled daily and start playing with toys as early as 3 weeks old. Border Collies from my bloodline have been featured on the "Meaty Bone" dog treat box, limited edition artwork, Austin Fit Magazine, Voyage Houston Magazine, and more. Many of the Border Collies you see on TV trace their lineage back to this bloodline, and they are incredibly eager to please.
We are available seven days a week from 10 AM to 8 PM to answer any questions and provide information about our Border Collies.
